Compassionate Health Clinics

A write up about Compassion SE 2011

doors_open_at_SE_blog

This post comes from the original posted on http://www.examiner.com

In the overly connected world of instant status alerts and cryptic text messages it is often hard to notice the details of the community just outside these little screens. Compassion Connect breaks through with a collective aid approach in communities with basic health needs. Volunteers involved in these clinics act on one specific notion of being a Christian as stated by St. Francis of Assisi. He exclaimed that everyone should “preach the gospel at all times and (only) when necessary use words.”

According to a health Survey administered by the Center for Disease Control, there are currently over 50 million people without health insurance in the United States of America. 3,780,230 of those interviewed reside in the state of Oregon. Many thousands of these people attend the health clinics organized with Compassion Connect and local churches in the area of need.

The clinic held June 18th, at Lane Middle School in Southeast Portland, proves just how impressive the feat of organizing and completing these events can be. From the moment someone stepped in.....

Snapshots from Life at Barberry

What if this is status quo for life in Christ?

flowersblog

To share with others just a few snapshots from life at Barberry:

A knock at the door. Four little girls with exotic looking flowers. “For you—a gift.”

Meet new brothers and sisters in surprising places. Be blessed by His providence in just the right moment.

Go to the Lord in prayer, totally unsure of what to do, begging for His will and His wisdom.

Meet a girl who is recovering from an addiction to Heroin. Answer her questions about God. Pray like you’ve never prayed before that she makes it through the night. Trust Him to love her and care for her the way you know you never could.

Go to get your mail. Come back half an hour later, sweaty from playing soccer.

Thank God with a full heart for the...

Loving at a Close Distance

What it means to be a missionary in your own backyard

comfortzone

I began my journey of Christian faith five years ago in the month of April. I, like so many, saw Jesus pass my way, and felt compelled to follow Him. I felt I had been given a second chance at life, and that I would never be the same. It was true; each year has been drastically different than the year before. As I look back, I see that the Lord has been calling me further and further down His path, deeper into relationship with Him, and into an understanding of what that looks like for me.

I always dreamed of the life of a missionary, even before I was a Christian. I envisioned myself being the hand that fed the poor and was filled with joy at the prospect of bringing hope to those who had little or nothing at all. When I received the word of Christ, I knew His intention for me included the sharing of His hope, the only hope for the world. So, I went to Africa in hopes that His path for me was leading in that direction. I was there for three weeks, testing the ground, praying, and waiting for confirmation that this was where the Lord was leading. But, when I returned home,

"Farewell Rob Bell" ?....Farewell Christian Witness

Why Pastor Piper's Tweet matters as much as Pastor Bell's book

titanic-farewell

"Bon Voyage"..."Farewell" they are words that create a mental picture for me.  The same way that "Your Excellency" creates a picture of someone bowed low to receive a king.

With “Farewell” or “Bon Voyage” I picture an early 20th century scene.  A large passenger ship pulling away from a pier filled with people looking back at the familiar audience left standing on the dock.  The family members wave back and forth wishing "Bon Voyage" or "Farewell."  The atmosphere is filled with love, longing, and good.

\fer-ˈwel\= a wish of well-being at parting

Recently "Farewell" has taken on a new meaning...it is used in a way that means exactly the opposite of its literal meaning.

In one short message (Pastor Piper's Tweet) that circled the world...”Farewell" had it's meaning flipped.  In <140 characters the world received a message that was bigger than the message itself

In a world of hyper fast communication using the most universal mediums with the fewest characters possible we have to be aware of the complex messages we create and communicate in 140 letters or less.  Today the message is much more than the message if you know what I mean.

On Feb. 26th Pastor John Piper sent a tweet that has spread like wildfire. "Farewell Rob Bell. http://dsr.gd/fZqmd8"
This was his response to the new Pastor Rob Bell book "Love Wins," which wouldn't be released for another two weeks.

It seemed clear that Mr. Piper had drawn some conclusions....

Volunteer Story #3 Jennifer

A short video series from volunteers.

jenblog

Our third and final story in the 3 part series

Jennifer Johnson's story is a powerful story of surrender to God.  She exemplifies for us all what it might look like to live sold out for Jesus. She is part of the Apartment Complex Initiative which takes the values and vision of compassion clinics to a whole new level.  It is a level of Christlikeness that follows the call to "go and be WITH" the people who are lost and hurting.
