I just want to share that God is awesome. When I heard about the opportunity to offer a one-day health clinic, I had no idea it would take eight months of labor to pull it off. I thought, "A one-day event--that should be no big deal." I was so mistaken. I hate admit that my attitude was not the greatest during some of the year's preparation for this event, but that is true. I kept thinking that Jesus tricked me into getting involved. But all that changed on the day of the event. I still felt a bit like a fish out of water, but what I experienced that day worked wonders in my heart. I saw our team work with our over 250 volunteers from sixteen congregations and other civic organizations to create a great outreach that blessed many, many people. 120 people received dental, optical and chiropractic care, over 300 people received a free lunch, plus the more than 200 additional lunches we sent to feed the hungry in downtown Portland. We received plenty of help through generous financial donations to pay all expenses and have some left for next year's project. God answered hundreds of prayers as the whole team experienced the smiles of our guests, the tears of joy when our guests received their first pair of glasses or relief from a tooth ache, the laughter and joy of the children. One guest even received a job through the help of the follow up area! One guest did not realize she would be able to get new glasses after her eye checkup. When she was told this was the case, she pulled off the pair of glasses she was wearing, taped and wired together from long overuse. With tears in her eyes, she said, "Really? I will?" Our volunteer assured her that she would. Another woman told me: "Brian, I had never imagined this was possible. For years I have been brushing these teeth and praying, 'Jesus, keep them from developing cavities,' all the while fearing that indeed they were rotting. Oh me of little faith! And today," she paused as the gratitude expressed itself in tears, "today I discovered that they are not rotting, they are indeed fine. And so along with a cleaning the dentist restored this other tooth. See?" she said, pulling up her lip to reveal a beautiful restoration. I experienced God's provisions, God's grace outpoured on this event. It was a great, great day of ministry and outreach. The love of God experienced in tangible form through many, many volunteers caring for many people. I realized as I experienced the "day" that it was a God-sized task we were about. Organizing and orchestrating such an event takes the Living God working through some willing servants. It became clear to me why it seemed like such a huge undertaking: it was one! But God was bigger and came through again and again. It is with great thanksgiving that I give God the glory and invite you to do the same! |
